Start with the jacket illustration, go past the colorful end papers and the slowly page through the more than 200 color and B/W drawings, paintings and photos. Exploring this book is an exotic journey and a lavish celebration of the artist, architect and designer, Joseph Urban. He began his career as an architect in Vienna and came to America in 1911. His sensibility evolved with the changing styles of the day, first in Art Nouveau and later in Deco and Modernist styles. Urban's work included nightclubs, stage sets for the Ziegfeld Follies, Metropolitan Opera and many early films, residential and commercial interiors, and children's book illustrations. Of all his many wonderful projects, little remains except Mar A Lago in Palm Beach, and parts of the New School and Hearst Tower in NYC.
This book is written by John Loring, a prolific author in his own right and former design director of Tiffany & Co. We are fortunate to have this treasure trove of material so we can enjoy Urban's dramatic vision and creativity. It is bound to be the great Gift Book of the season for lovers of early 20th century design.
